There is one element of a family that is certainly going to cause trouble. Chances are everyone in the house likes a different temperature. Some want the inside to be like a tropical rain forest, and others want a sub arctic environment. This is not limited to families; roommates can be even more temperature sensitive, and the fights can be considerably worse. Here are a few tips to keep everything on the even keel.
Temperature differences are often easy to deduce. Men are by and large more hot natured, and women, by proxy, much more likely to be cold. There is scientific reasoning for it – the metabolic rates are vastly different between men and women.
These are no means exhaustive, but it is better than a night of arguments.
Space Heaters – The old days of leaving a space heater on overnight is deadly is fast becoming a thing of the past. Most of the modern heaters are much safer, but you still need to follow the instructions. Keep the main thermostat at a comfortable level while the colder folks can warm up in another room.
Zone Heating – Today’s smart thermostats and vents can keep a home at two different temperatures with relative ease. How nice to be in one room toasty and in another comfortably cool – at the same time.
Money is the root of the issue – Yes; money is the key of the thermostat argument. Making some quick and easy efficiency upgrades in the home are a great idea. Add more insulation, do some routine maintenance and use curtains to maximize sunshine. The savings will show quickly, and it may help resolve some issues of changing the thermostat.
Compromise – Face it; some battles are not worth the effort and hurt feelings. If the main issue is the bedroom, see if the thermostat can be at a lower level, while adding a blanket or two. The secret here: communication. Yes gentlemen; this means carrying on a conversation with your spouse or significant other.
As stated before, this is not an exhaustive list, but it is a positive start in the right direction. If nothing else, it is a good way to open up channels of honest and open communication, and it all started with the setting of the thermostat.
