What You Need to Know About the R-22 Phase-Out

May 1, 2015 by Cranbury Comfort

R-22You may be asking yourself what R-22 is. R-22 is a colorless gas, also known as a refrigerant that is commonly used in AC units and heat pumps. Basically, it is a coolant that keeps your HVAC system running efficiently. R-22 contains hydro chlorofluorocarbons or HCFCs that have proven to deplete the ozone layer and possibly even contribute to global warming. It has been deemed by the EPA that the production of R-22 must be completely ceased by 2020.

How do you know if your air conditioner uses R-22. Well, if your unit is more than 10 years old, it is most likely compatible with R-22. Newer units, especially high efficiency units, are made to use R-410A refrigerant which is a much more environmentally friendly choice. It is crucial that you know which type of refrigerant your air conditioning unit runs on.

The most immediate downfall across most of the nation will be the rising cost of R-22 as it gets closer to 2020. As of right now, the cost increases by about 20-30% per year and it is continuing to increase. As mandatory decreases in production take place the cost of new R-22 increases proportionately.

If your unit is more than 10 years old, you need to start doing your research on the R-22 phase-out. Air conditioning units are made to last about 15 years so it may be in your best interest to go ahead and have your unit replaced with a more efficient model anyway. Make sure you do your research on different units as well to make sure you purchase one that runs on R-410A.

If you have any questions or concerns about the R-22 phase-out, feel free to contact Cranbury Comfort Systems and we will be happy to answer your questions for you.
