When Old Man Winter came knocking at the door, a lot of people in the Cranbury area discovered their home heating systems were not ready for the task at hand. They wound up paying for emergency service calls for things that could have been handled more cheaply with a routine service call.
The time to prepare your home heating system was before winter got here. By scheduling a regular service call, a technician can come out and perform a thorough system check. He can identify and remedy small problems before they become big problems later on.
Now that winter is here, does that mean you can’t have your system checked and serviced? Of course not. Before you call for an inspection/maintenance checkup, make a note of these items. When the tech shows up, share this information.
• Unusual sounds. Does everything sound the same as it did last winter? It doesn’t matter how small the sound difference is. Minor sounds can be the start of something very major.
• Is the heat the same? Are the vents providing the same volume of air and the same heat level? A change in either one could mean there’s a ductwork problem. Animals can get under a house and damage ducts.
• When was the last maintenance/inspection call? Home heating systems need regular checkups. Get the list of what was checked the last time and let the tech see it.
The federal government’s Energy Star website has a maintenance checklist that includes things homeowners can do and things a licensed service tech should do.
